U19

A 2-14 to 0-16 victory over Upperchurch Drombane in Templederry secured a place in the County final where we will play either Arravale Rovers or Kilsheelan. MacDonaghs played with the aid of the breeze in the first half, but Upperchurch had the first two points on the board. Michael Hennelly got Kilruane off the mark with a point, and a monster of a free from keeper Tom Austin had the sides level on 0-2 each after ten minutes. There was very little between the teams in a competitive encounter. The Magpies suffered a blow when the influential Eamonn Coonan was forced to leave the field with a serious wrist injury. Cormac Kennedy was called into the action. Upperchurch were a point ahead as the interval loomed, but MacDonaghs finished the half with a flourish, adding three points to take a two-point advantage into the dressing room.

MacDonaghs redeployed the troops for the second half. Cian Moyles went to centre-back, and Cormac Kennedy slotted into midfield. The Mid champions cut the gap to the minimum with a point from a Richie Ryan free. The Magpies responded with a Michael Cleary goal after a typical Tommy O’Meara run had created the opportunity.  Three points on the spin for Upperchurch cut the gap to the minimum.  Michael Cleary and Richie Ryan traded points from frees before Jack Mulcahy fired the sliotar to the net in the 45th minute, to give the Magpies a four-point cushion. Tremendous defensive work in the final quarter kept Upperchurch at bay, and Kilruane held out for a four-point victory

Team:  Tom Austin, Danny Cahalan, Cathal England, Cian Hayes, Paul Molloy, Eamonn Coonan, Shane Cleary, Tommy Burriss, Cian Moyles, Cillian Healy, Jack Mulcahy, Tommy O’Meara, Michael Hennelly, Brian O’Meara, Michael Cleary. Subs: Cormac Kennedy, Charlie Kennedy.

We scored 2-9 from play.  All six forwards scored from play with substitute Cormac Kennedy and Tom Austin (free) also chipping in.

Best wishes to Eamonn Coonan, who sustained a serious hand injury in the first half. He has been a key figure in our progress to date and will be a massive loss in the final.

Colin Gaynor raised the third green flag midway through the second half, and on the cusp of full time, Conor McGrath found the net from a free to seal a four-point victory.

Team: Shane O'Meara, Ronan Hayes, Odhran Goulding, Sean Whelan, Robert Cleary, Conor McGrath (1-0 free), Shane Carroll, Arman Khan Wahid, Dylan Hussey Sheahan, Emmet Dwyer (1-1), Rory McLoughney, James Last, Ciaran Foote (1-5, 0-3 frees) , Daniel O'Brien, Harry Gannan, Tom Hannan, Colin Gaynor (1-0), Jack Ryan (0-1), Liam Dooley, Cian O'Looney.

Paddy Quinlan U11 Festival

The Paddy Quinlan Hurling Festival was held in MacDonagh Park on Saturday in glorious weather. Eight teams participated from five clubs and played in two divisions. Approximately 100 hurlers were on display with everyone getting game time and all squads going home with a Paddy Quinlan memorial plaque. The organisers would like to thank Moneygall, Nenagh Eire Óg, Borrisokane, Burgess and our own 32 players from Kilruane MacDonaghs. Also, thanks to the timekeepers, pitch organisers, referees Eoin O’Meara and Ava Gaynor, and the crew on refreshments who were very busy over the morning providing sustenance to players, parents and spectators.
